Safety & Contraindications

Brahmi:

  • Sedation: May cause drowsiness in some people — use caution when driving or operating heavy machinery.
  • Thyroid medication: May interact with thyroid hormone levels — monitor if taking thyroid drugs.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Limited data; use under medical supervision.

Vacha:

  • Carcinogenic concerns (β-asarone): North American regulatory agencies caution against long-term internal use due to β-asarone content in some species. Use purified or β-asarone-free forms only.
  • Pregnancy: Avoid during pregnancy due to potential uterine-stimulating effects.
  • Neurological conditions: May overstimulate those with high Pitta or neurological imbalances — avoid high doses in such individuals.

Ashwagandha:

  • Thyroid conditions: May increase thyroid hormone levels — monitor in cases of hyperthyroidism or when using thyroid meds.
  • Autoimmune diseases: May stimulate the immune system — consult your doctor if you have autoimmune conditions.
  • Pregnancy: Avoid high doses; traditionally used with caution in pregnancy.

Shankhpushpi:

  • Sedation: May enhance effects of other sedatives — avoid combining with sleep medications or tranquilizers.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Generally considered safe in moderation, but limited modern human data.
  • Low energy (Kapha): May not be suited for individuals with very slow metabolism or excess Kapha unless combined with stimulants.

Jyotishmati:

  • Stimulant effects: Can be mentally stimulating — may cause restlessness in sensitive individuals or those with excess Pitta.
  • Pregnancy & fertility: Avoid in pregnancy; animal studies suggest possible anti-fertility effects.
  • Liver sensitivity: Rare hepatotoxicity at high doses — monitor if used long-term or in high concentrations.
